Franchitti Leads Honda Attack at St. Petersburg

Defending race winner and series champion Dario Franchitti was the quickest of the 10 Honda-powered entries in practice Friday for the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, the opening round in the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series.

Franchitti posted the third-fastest time around the 1.8-mile St. Petersburg street circuit during the second of two hour-long practice sessions today. Teammate Graham Rahal, winner of the 2008 race here, was fourth fastest on the day, just seven hundredths of a second off Franchitti's best time.

Scott Dixon led the morning session and finished the day fifth on the time charts in his Honda-powered Target Chip Ganassi Racing Dallara. Mike Conway, the 2011 race winner at Long Beach, made his debut with A.J. Foyt Racing and rounded out the top 10 in practice today.

Action in St. Petersburg continues Saturday with a final practice, followed by Firestone "Fast Six" knockout qualifying. The 100-lap race, first in the 16-race 2012 season, starts at 12:30 p.m. EDT, with live television coverage on ABC.

Dario Franchitti (#10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) 3rd quickest in Friday practice, defending race winner and 4-time series champion: "We're still learning both the engine and the chassis. The guys are working hard on it and we have tonight and a practice session tomorrow to get it right for qualifying. You always have these things when you're developing a new car. It's a lot of work."
