R - IndyCar Series Rookie

Sato Heads Honda Field Friday at Barber Motorsports Park

Building on the rapid pace displayed last weekend at the IZOD IndyCar Series season-opening Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Takuma Sato paced the Honda effort in Friday practice for round two at the scenic Barber Motorsports Park outside of Birmingham, Ala.

The Rahal Letterman Lanigan driver posted the third-fastest time in the dry, morning practice, and led the field in the wet afternoon session in preparation for Sunday's Honda Grand Prix of Alabama.

Reigning Indy Lights champion Josef Newgarden led the rookie contingent with the fourth-quickest time of the day for Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing. Other Honda-powered drivers in the top ten today included fellow rookie Simon Pagenaud, three-time defending series champion Dario Franchitti and his Chip Ganassi Racing teammate, Graham Rahal.

Action at Barber continues Saturday with a final practice, followed by Firestone "Fast Six" knockout qualifying. Sunday's 90-lap race starts at 2 p.m. EDT, with live television coverage on the NBC Sports Network.

Takuma Sato (#15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda) 3rd quickest Friday morning, fastest in rainy afternoon practice: "Barber is one of my favorite circuits in the series. It has nice, flowing corners with great elevation changes and it's very challenging. I always enjoy driving here and the fans are very enthusiastic, so it has a great atmosphere. We had a very competitive race last weekend so I hope we are able to have another strong weekend here."
