Newgarden Leads Honda Qualifiers at Milwaukee

·       Strong Honda performance in practice fails to transfer into qualifying

·       Final “short oval” round of 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series

Coming off a strong race two weeks ago at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Josef Newgarden led the Honda-powered field Saturday at The Milwaukee Mile, in Verizon IndyCar Series qualifying for Sunday’s ABC Supply Wisconsin 250, Presented by the Metro Milwaukee Honda Dealers.

Prior to qualifying, James Hinchcliffe led the field in both practice sessions, as Honda drivers claimed three of the top four positions in the morning practice, and three of the top five in the second hour-long session.  But Hinchcliffe crashed late in the second practice, and could only post the 13th-fastest speed in qualifying after his Andretti Autosport team affected repairs.

Changing conditions also impacted qualifying, with the track seemingly gaining speed through the early runs, before dropping off again for the final half of the field.  Despite being one of the final qualifiers, Marco Andretti will start ninth, with Takuma Sato rounding out the top 10 for Honda and A.J. Foyt Racing.    Sunday’s 250-lap run, the second and final “short oval” race in the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series, begins with live network television coverage at 3 p.m. EDT on the NBC Sports Network.

Josef Newgarden (#67 Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing Honda) 5th fastest in qualifying:  We had a pretty productive day, we lingered right in the top five, and never fell out, which is positive. I think we learned a lot about what we need for tomorrow. Tomorrow is really going to be a day of attrition. It looks like tire degradation is going to be a big deal this year. Tires really fall off on a stint, so as long as we look after that we should be strong. I feel like we have what we need to do a good job tomorrow.”
